After iPad2 launched in 2Q10, many vendors penetrated the tablet market from 2H10. Acer and Asus has announced Android 3.0 tablet in the 2011 Taipei Spring Computer Expo while other vendors such as Dell, Viewsonic, Gigabyte, MSI, FIC and Samsung released their Android and Windows tablet. A competitive tablet market will be expected in 2H11.

1HApril NAND Flash contract price partially remains at a stable level or mildly up 2%-5%. Most NAND Flash vendors had raised the contract price 10%-15% to reflect the uncertainty toward the supply side constraints after the earthquake. They tend to sustain the price at the same level in 1HApril.

According to DRAMeXchange, a research department of Trendforce,1H’Apr. contract price continues its upward trend that DDR3 2GB “Average” contract price is up 5.88% to US$18 ($2.03/2Gb) while DDR3 4GB “Average” increases 6.1% to US$35($2.03/2Gb).

According to DRAMeXchange, a research department of Trendforce, the weak end-market demand and impacts from the Japan earthquake on NB supply chain are placing increasing uncertainty on the 2Q shipments by ODM manufacturers. Even though the demand will likely be deferred to 2H11, but it will also be compromised by the considerable surge of the tablet shipments. It is expected that the crowding out effect will repress growth of NB.

After the strike of the 9.0 earthquake in Japan Tohoku area on March 11th, at first, there was a rapid spot price increase in the NAND Flash market, in response to the uncertain concern of an upcoming short supply. But because the impacts caused by the earthquake on NAND Flash supply chain were unknown at the time, some NAND Flash suppliers did not change the contract price in the first half of March. Then, the damage to the work in process (WIP) materials at Toshiba and SanDisk’s Yokkaichi plant came out.

According to DRAMeXchange, a research department of TrendForce, northeast Japan earthquake has led to a shortage in raw material commonly used in the semiconductor industry. Especially, due to suspended production capacity at Shin-Etsu plants in Fukushima and SUMCO plant in Yamagata, the worldwide Raw-Wafer supply was estimated to be reduced by 20 to 25%.

According to DRAMeXchange, a research department of Trendforce, February Notebook shipment has declined 21.8% month over month. Quanta and Compal have fallen behind expectation with a shipment record of 3.2 million units and 2.7 million units respectively. On the other hand, Pegatron February shipment dropped about 50% month over month.
