Weekly Review: Possible Supply Shortage for New iPhone, iPad Mini; Smartphone vs. Cameraphone Battle Begins
With the iPhone’s speculated September 12 unveiling fast approaching, the flurry of rumors has only increased. However, news from component makers indicates those planning to purchase the new iPhone or iPad mini may have to be quick about it – issues with the production of the iPhone’s in-cell panels suggest a shortage of the next-generation device that could potentially affect iPad mini supply as well. While Apple may have difficulty meeting demand, other manufacturers are not letting their guard down: Samsung will announce the arrival of its high-resolution Galaxy Note 2 (end of August), and Microsoft, Nokia, and Amazon all plan to unveil new products before Apple (early September). The plethora of launches in the next few weeks will be quite a sight to see – interestingly, after previously garnering a good amount of attention, news of Microsoft’s Surface tablet is notably missing from the recent frenzy.
Leaked iPhone photos continue to crop up – a picture of a smaller USB connector cable has even surfaced. If the photos are real, the world will be saying goodbye to Apple’s 10-year-old peripheral. Meanwhile, although the Apple v. Samsung case has yet to reach a conclusion, the result is in for similar patent lawsuits in South Korea: both sides were found guilty of patent infringement, but Samsung is off the hook for charges of copying the interface and external appearance of Apple’s devices. The ruling has sparked debate on whether Samsung got off easy on home turf.
In other news, smartphone sales continue to see growth across the globe – Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand are all showing similar trends. As digital camera sales shrink due to the rise of smartphones, industry leader Nikon is stepping it up with the introduction of the first Android-powered camera. With Wi-Fi capabilities, sharing to social networking sites, and inherently higher camera specs, the new product species will bring the fight to smartphones, but whether it is enough to entice consumers or not remains to be seen. Regardless, the new product marks Android’s debut in the photography world. Sony has unveiled an improved cameraphone as well – looks like smartphones and cameraphones are gearing up for a long battle.
