Week in Review: Windows RT Price a Slap to PC Makers, iPhone and iPad Mini Rumors Abound
As the Apple-Samsung case dragged on last week, even the judge seems to be running out of patience, hoping the electronics giants will be able to work something out on their own – whether this is a viable option or not, only time will tell. Meanwhile, iPhone and iPad rumors continue to proliferate. From next-generation iPhone components to mini iPad accessories, there is an ever-amplifying buzz surrounding all things Apple. Even the pre-order and release date have been proposed, but varying specifications keep popping up – in consideration of all the fake iPhone 5 photos “leaked”last year, all these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt for now.
Last week also brought news of Microsoft’s Windows RT and Windows Phone 8. On September 5, Nokia will hold a press conference that will likely revolve around Windows Phone 8. Windows RT manufacturers have been revealed one by one, but major PC makers like Acer, HP, and Toshiba are not on the list. Additionally, the Surface is rumored to sport a competitive US$199 price tag – a figure PC makers will have difficulty meeting, leaving Microsoft as the sole manufacturer. Perhaps part of the software heavyweight’s strategy?
As for the iPhone, Xiaomi Technology has jumped the gun on Apple, launching the successor to its popular MiOne smartphone at a mere RMB$1,999. Boasting flagship-standard specifications, the second-gen device is likely to cause another splash in China’s smartphone market. As Xiaomi’s products, software, and even press conferences are highly reminiscent of Apple, the MiOne’s successor is set to squeeze market share from the Cupertino company.
Looking at smartphone figures from last week, global smartphone growth is slowing – iPhone sales most significantly. Android phone market share continues to climb, but the iPad remains on top in the tablet market. By 2016, tablets are expected to surpass notebooks in terms of sales, which in turn will benefit mobile DRAM growth.
