Week in Review: Apple and Samsung’s Love-Hate Relationship; Microsoft Begins Development on Second-Gen Surface Tablet
According to research firm IDC, Android-based smartphones account for 60% of the global market, a 106.5% increase compared to the same period last year. Although Apple shipments grew as well, the Cupertino company’s market share decreased. As Apple believes the Android system has copied many iOS features, its patent lawsuit against Android shipment leader Samsung is unsurprising.
As the Apple-Samsung case continued this week, both parties continued to present further evidence; it is looking like Samsung copied several Apple concepts, but the final ruling has yet to be announced. However, the situation is awkward regardless of the outcome, as Apple and Samsung have a love-hate relationship – one-fifth of the iPhone’s components are produced by Samsung, and Apple’s orders account for 8.8% of Samsung’s revenue, making the iPhone manufacturer Samsung’s largest client. With such an interdependent relationship, it is unlikely the makers will completely sever their ties anytime soon.
In other news, Microsoft’s job listings seem to indicate that the maker is beginning development on the second-generation Surface tablet. It appears Microsoft is determined to jump headlong into the development of both software and hardware, regardless of the discord such a move may sow amongst downstream manufacturers.
Next-generation iPhone rumors continue to proliferate; will the device use a nano SIM card? Just how many pins will the new connector have? New screws and the removal of many Google services from iOS 6 are also part of the iPhone gossip. Samsung’s next-gen tablet was in the spotlight as well last week. With all these rumors flying about, there is one thing we can be certain about – the mobile DRAM market is definitely benefitting from the rapid rise of portable devices.
