Week in Review: Samsung’s NAND Market Share Grows, Apple-Samsung Trial Opens
In a recap of last week’s main events, heavyweights Samsung, Apple, and Microsoft were in the spotlight. According to DRAMeXchange data, Samsung’s global NAND flash market share has risen to 42.4%, a larger slice of the market than the manufacturer took this time last year, widening the gap over runner-up Toshiba. However, as a result of price decline, the Korean maker did not see an equivalent boost in revenue figures; Samsung’s revenue increased by a mere 10.1%.
Furthermore, the patent infringement lawsuit between Samsung and Apple began in a flurry this week; both sides made strong opening statements, and Apple presented several early design sketches that gave the public a peek at the evolution of iPhone design. The trial has already seen its fair share of drama, as Samsung leaked exhibits that the court had already deemed inadmissible to the media, in a move that irritated U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh and may incur sanctions for Samsung in the future.
Also last week, Microsoft began releasing Windows 8 OEM software to manufacturers; however, ultrabook sales may not perform as expected, as the product category is forecast to take 5% of the notebook market in the fourth quarter. On the other hand, some market research firms have projected ultrabooks will account for 35% of the notebook market by 2016. Whether this forecast will pan out or not remains to be seen, as it is generally believed that the next-gen Windows 8 tablet will negatively affect ultrabook sales.
In other news, iPhone rumors continue to emerge, the latest of which that Apple will unveil its next-gen smartphone on September 12. Additionally, news of an 8-pin dock connector with MagSafe connectivity, as opposed to the previously rumored 19-pin dock, has been circulating.
