【Market View】Demand remains low for DDR in spot market

Published 2003-10-14 (GMT+8)

:: Spot market: SDRAM prices are up slightly while DDR prices continually stepping down

After China's week-long holiday, the demand doesn't pick up for DDR in spot market, what worse is, prices for DDR 266/333/400 keep going down. We have heard DDR 256Mb 32Mx8 266/333MHz down to $ 4.13 and DDR 256Mb 32Mx8 400MHz, $4.16 since some particular market traders tried to reduce their inventory level in fearing of the sluggish market .The module houses, channel distributors and traders come in the market to look for parts only when they have gotten orders on hand. Most of them are reluctant to increase their inventory level at this moment.

However, SDRAM prices are seeing some support by orders from China for consumer electronics such as DVD, STB(set-top box )...etc.

According to our data for the past week, SDRAM 1Mx16 (16Mb 133MHz) was up 3.9%; 4Mx16( 32Mb 133MHz) up 0.55%, 16Mx8 (128Mb 133MHz) up 0.32% and 32Mx8(256Mb 133MHz) up 0.65%. While on DDR 16Mx8 (128Mb 266/333MHz) was down 0.40%, DDR 32Mx8( 256Mb 266/333MHz) down 0.92%% , DDR 32Mx8 (256Mb 400MHz) down 1.14%. This shows the premium between SDRAM/DDR has been widened gradually.

:: There might be 2% - 3% down on 2H October contract prices

Regarding the contract price, due to the sluggish demand in spot market, we project there might be 2 -3% down on 2H October. Most of time, spot prices are leading indicators of contract prices. Since 2H August, the average spot price for DDR 32Mx8 (256Mb, 266/333MHz) has been down from $4.92 to $4.28 and the contract price for DDR32Mx8 (256Mb, 266/333MHz) remains at average $5.22 (high: $5.38, low: $5.06), thus, the contract price may be dragged down by the stepping down spot prices.
