:: The price for DDR remains staggering
The transactions for DRAM modules in Asia spot market remain stagnant and
the transactions are focus on CPU and NAND flash these two days.(10/6, 10/7)
Many buyers from Europe and China are looking for these two parts in the market. The demand for SDRAM is still much higher than DDR, We may say that the demand
for SDRAM 128Mb/ 256Mb are most for upgrading orders. Also, we see great demand
on SDRAM PC133 4Mx16 (64Mb) and NAND Flash memory due to tight supply. The
demand for 4Mx16 is partly contributed from orders booked on Taipei Computex
show. The price for SDRAM PC133 4Mx16 has been up dramatically in past month while
the price for DDR stays staggering. People in the spot market still hold little
hope that the DRAM price may move upward by the boosting demand from China market
after a week-long National holiday and the coming PC shopping season. However,
no one is sure about the demand and not many market participants are willing
to keep high inventory level at this moment.
:: NAND flash memory is in tight supply
As for NAND flash memory ,due to a shortage recently, Toshiba has stopped shipments NAND to the spot market and Samsung keeps expanding the production capacity for NAND for higher profit margin. In April, Hynix and STMicroelectronics (ST) had announced an agreement to jointly develop and market a full portfolio of NAND flash , beginning with a 512Mbit device in 2H03 and plan to gain investment from Taiwanese DRAM module makers. We observe that the ongoing capacity expanding plan on NAND flash by Samsung and Hynix may have impact on DRAM production capacity output in 2004, however, we remain cautious about the effect on DRAM price in 2004.
