SATA3 SSD ~ DRAMeXchange Annual Review
In this year's annual review of SSD by DRAMeXchange, a research division of Trendforce, we test out 32 different 2.5-inch SSDs, including standard SSDs with affordable prices and high-speed SDDs, which are adopted by medium and small size companies and work stations, with several categories (SATA2 with 60GB and 100GB storage and SATA3 with over 100GB storage.)

OCZ IBIS HSDL SSD 240GB is a different kind of SSD product, it use adopts High Speed Data Link (HSDL) interface, and also use Sandforce chips as SSD controller and uses Intel 34nm NAND Flash chips. OCZ’s HSDL addresses bottleneck issues as an open standard interface that eliminates the bandwidth restrictions found in current storage protocols.

OCZ RevoDrive X2 240GB SSD adopts Sandforce chips as SSD controller and uses Intel 34nm NAND Flash chips. OCZ Enthusiast PCI-E SSDs seems good product of gaming desktops and workstation PCs, how fast it can be?
We chose the motherboard with Intel chipsets as the testing platform equipped with Intel i5 processor and DDR3 memory, the bench was tested under the Windows 7 and Ubuntu Linux 11.04 operating system.

MLC NAND Flash applications take up the lion's share of the market with MLC to SLC in a proportion of 99% to 1%. The two Flash types differ most in the cost, read/write endurance and read/write characteristics. In the case of Toshiba, the wafer used is exclusive to SLC Flash production.

The SSD performance depends on the NAND Flash chip quality, batch number and cost. However, its key factor is the SSD controller chip as it is responsible for the communication between computer and Flash chips used in SSD, the management of data input and output, the control of writing methods and blocks as well as the fault tolerance of data read/write. So to speak, it is the nerve center unit of the SSD.

Unlike traditional hard disk industry, SSD industry requires enough capacity in disk, read write head and motor production. Small and medium makers can’t afford that much. In recent years, M&A cases have often occurred among hard disk giants. Seagate purchased Samsung’s hard disk business in 2Q 2011 after Maxtor takeover in 2005. Western Digital, another hard disk giant also bought Hitachi’s hard disk drive business in 1Q 2011.
