The OCZ Vertex 4 512 GB is a heavy duty product, a suitable choice for desktops, work stations, servers, and high-performance notebooks. Introduced by OCZ Technology, the OCZ Vertex 4 differs from most performance SSD products on the market in that it has an Indilinx controller chip, not the more commonly used SandForce controller. Indilinx, a South Korean company, was acquired by OCZ Technology, and both teams collaborated on the new controller chip used in the Vertex 4. This article is part of a series of tests performed by DRAMeXchange, a research division of TrendForce.

DRAMeXchange, a research division of TrendForce, has tested 42 models of 2.5-inch SSD in its 2012 SSD ranking, covering standard SSD as well as performance SSD used in work stations and high-end notebooks. We tested SATA 2 and SATA 3 SSD – SATA 2 products were still included because many desktops and notebooks only support SATA 2, so it is the most affordable option for improving performance. However, as the market mainstream gradually transitions to SATA 3, the upgraded specification will be a better choice for new notebook and desktop models.

The SSD market has gradually matured since DRAMeXchange, a research division of TrendForce, previously stated that NAND flash-based SSD price had reached a sweet spot. Currently, SSD products are flourishing, and different controller chips are used based on storage capacity and performance requirements. In 2012, SSD shipment volume will increase dramatically due to the popularity of ultrabooks, the arrival of Intel’s new platform, and the release of Windows 8. The device upgrade cycle brought about by these events will greatly benefit SSD products.
